Ian Dubé has over two decades of leadership, management and business analyst experience in the life sciences, health sciences and biotechnology sectors.

Selected Achievements

Leadership, Strategy and Implementation

  • led the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto (1995-2000)

  • headed a multi-institutional cancer genetic diagnostic program for several University of Toronto teaching hospitals (1986 to 1995)

  • strategic planning, and implementation processes as a Director of the Sunnybrook Hospital-Dynacare Laboratories joint venture (1995-2000)

  • in the 1980s, developed and implemented the strategic plan for a regional clinical laboratory service (cancer cytogenetics and molecular genetics) and worked closely with government, hospital and university sectors to fund the program’s growth for over 20 years.

Administration and Financial Accountability

  • accountable to Sunnybrook Hospital for the hospital’s clinical laboratory budget (~$22M/yr)

  • responsible for the clinical and financial activities of 15 physicians and four scientists

  • managed the budgets for major clinical diagnostic activities at university-affiliated Hospitals

  • chairperson of numerous multi-stakeholder search committees including department and division head searches and, at Sunnybrook Hospital, member of the Senior Medical Council, the Academic Medical Council, and the Medical Advisory Committee.

Business Analysis

  • private sector business analyst (2004-2006) at StemCell Technologies Inc., a biotechnology company providing state-of-the-art tools to the medical research community.

  • graduate of the Queen’s University School of Business Executive MBA Program (2002) and the University of Toronto’s Program in Health Administration (2001).

Entrepreneurial, Community and Philanthropic Activities

  • president and founder of a private Canadian charity with a substantial endowment for full-tuition educational awards (www.macvillefoundation.com)

  • raised over $5M for research and development at University of Toronto teaching hospitals

  • several private sector initiatives including founding a Toronto real estate holding company

  • Councilor of Runnymede Public School in Toronto.

Academic, Research and Awards

  • directed externally funded University of Toronto research teams for 17 consecutive years

  • published over 100 scientific articles and 14 book chapters, edited one book, made over 90 invited oral research presentations (several international)

  • 1993 Junior Scientist Award of the Canadian Association of Pathologists for cloning a gene

  • 1996 Distinguished Service Award of the Department of Pathology, University of Toronto

  • full professor rank, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Faculty of Medicine University of Toronto in 1999

  • Government of British Columbia, consultant to the Ministry of Health (2006 to present)
